Back to Snowdonia…

…but this time I didn't even open Scrambles in Snowdonia! This was another MPS jaunt, and on Saturday I planned to have a look at a Grade 3 scramble on Atlantic Slab, Carnedd y Filiast. As it was, the rain was blowing sideways down the Nant Ffrancon, so we walked around the side and then along the ridge from Carnedd y Filiast to Y Garn, and continued over the Glyderau. The entire route was incredibly windy, but some other groups managed to stay sheltered (for example on the east face of Tryfan).

Sunday dawned with a forecast of 75mph gusts and wintry showers, but we went to have a look at Ordinary Route (Diff) on Idwal Slabs. Coming up the Nant Ffrancon the tops were all clear, and the first pitch was lots of fun, but pretty uneventful weather-wise.

Meteorologically speaking, the crux of the route was the start of the second pitch. It was at this point that the driving hail came down, and the route simultaenously turned into a waterfall.

What with discretion being the better part of valour, we decided to back off, and retreated back to Idwal Cottage where I shamelessly tucked into a massive currant slice to get over the trauma. All in all, still a very enjoyable day.

The False Gribin (Attempt 2)

With a fiery sunrise and 16 degrees Celcius at Ogwen at 6am, I made it up the False Gribin on Monday. It was significantly less effort than my previous attempt! A lovely little scramble, and I just had enough time to leg it up the proper Gribin before heading out to Anglesey for the day. Brilliant.

The False Gribin

In amongst a very enjoyable stag weekend (congratulations J), I managed to find some time yesterday for a wander on the Glyders. I've come down Y Gribin often enough, but I fancied either a wander up the False Gribin, or at least a look at it to see what it was like when the forecast wasn't "mobility may be impossible on higher ground". Sure enough, when I got there it was too wet and windy to be any fun, so I wandered up a snow slope to the side of the main ridge.

Although there were a few gusts, it wasn't too bad until I reached the top of the ridge (see photo for the view back down towards Llyn Bochlwyd). The wind was absolutely hammering across the top, and mobility was indeed impossible! The plan had been to descend Y Gribin and meet the rest of the group in Cwm Idwal. However, I had to turn around, and went back down the way I'd come up; not quite what I had in mind, but a very fun couple of hours nonetheless. The snow was melting rapidly, so it looks like that's the end of another Snowdonia winter. Bring on the sunshine!
