Peak sunshine

Becs and I took advantage of the good weather a couple of weeks ago to visit Edale and run from Mam Nick around to the top of Jacob's Ladder. I then left her to carry on to Edale while I slogged back up the hill to fetch the car. We did well with conditions, as the boggy ground between Rushup Edge and Brown Knoll was sufficiently frozen to avoid us sinking thigh-deep in the swampy sections that normally grab you.

The paragliders were out in force; I counted twenty in the air at one time as I returned to the car (and saw one crash-land into a dry-stone wall, but he was OK!). My entry for this year's Edale Skyline has recently been confirmed, so I just need to recce the rest of the route now. Saturday was spent at the Peak Edge Hotel, a new establishment which seems to be the only contemporary hotel in the entire Peak District! Heartily recommended though, with lovely rooms and cracking food on the room service menu (nothing says post-run recovery like curry with half rice / half chips!).

On Sunday we returned home via Sherwood Pines. Becs hired a bike and we did a lap of the blue loop, then she retired to the car to warm up while I had a quick blast around the Kitchener trail. It was bitterly cold; the horrible damp pentrating kind that seeps into every fibre of your body, but it did have the welcome effect of making the trails pretty easy going. Despite running the previous day and having already done 10km on the blue loop with Becs, I rode a new personal best of sub-50 minutes, so had a nice finish to a lovely weekend.

Last glimpse of summer

I managed to get out for a quick blast on the bike around the Kitchener Loop on Wednesday afternoon. The unseasonably warm and dry weather has meant that Sherwood Pines hasn't yet turned into the quagmire it so quickly transforms into under the onslaught of autumn downpours. The trails were running nicely, the sun shone brightly through the trees, and the bike performed flawlessly. There's been a lot of work done laying down hardcore in preparation for the winter, particularly through the boggy sections in the tightest bits of pine plantation. I managed to get around the 15km in under an hour, so I think next time it'll be two laps I'm aiming for.

The only concession to the fact that September was ending was the fact that the sun dipped below the horizon far earlier than I felt it ought to. But that just means it's nearly the season for night riding and cold crisp mornings – maybe the end of summer isn't necessarily bad news after all…

Cheeky new purchase

Oops. It seems I've accidentally purchased the best bike on the face of the planet.

Having spent the past few weeks getting out on the road bike fairly frequently (even if not for very long each time), I've been enjoying my cycling. Combined with some more recent offroad forays, I've felt myself being drawn back towards mountain biking. To that end, I have watched eBay like a hawk for the past week, considering everything from £50 frames to a £500 Stinky (mmmmm….). I finally plumped for something that was actually within my budget, and she arrived last night…

It's a bit old-school, but I think it looks great. That's not the most crucial thing though, so I took it down to Sherwood Pines today for a quick blast around – I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it is utterly awesome. It's a bit of a weird setup, having been delivered without a front brake, and running as a single speed on vertical dropouts. However, neither hindered me much, and I spent a very enjoyable morning razzing through the various downhill lines. Since my last trip, all the sign posts have been put in place, and there's a little bit of North Shore stuff in place now too. The trails were much drier than last time, and much quicker. The bike was the main event though, and proved better than I could ever have hoped -it's incredibly playful and just wants to be thrashed at every opportunity. I think the fat 2.3" front tyre helps, but the geometry of the random no-name frame (which had been a worry) seems perfect too. I took the last few sections of the Kitchener (Red) XC route back to the car park from the downhill area, and it was just as comfortable on that too. The single-speed setup will have to go though! Of course, this purchase means that the road bike will have to go, but it served its purpose very well. Roll on the rest of the dirt-based summer.
