I’ve had great success in the past using my Sony Ericsson K750i as a bluetooth GPRS modem for my MacBook. Reinstalling Leopard meant setting that up again, and there were a few little tweaks from Tiger. In addition, I had enough trouble finding enough information to set it up originally, so hopefully this will help someone else in future. I guess these instructions are applicable to most phones, because nothing really needs doing on the phone, it’s all on the MacBook.<\/p>\n

  1. Firstly, download modem scripts for your phone from Ross Barkman’s incredibly useful\u00a0web page<\/a>. Please, for the love of god, read the whole web page and the readme that comes with the scripts too.<\/li>\n
  2. Copy the modem scripts to\u00a0\/Library\/Modem Scripts.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Open\u00a0System Preferences<\/span>, and then the\u00a0Network <\/span>panel.<\/li>\n
  4. Create a new location if you want- I have one called ‘Mobile’ (cunning, eh?)<\/li>\n
  5. Click the Bluetooth<\/span>\u00a0tab on the left-hand side.<\/li>\n
  6. In the Telephone<\/span>\u00a0field, type the APN for your telephone service provider (UK settings available on Ross’ website\u00a0here<\/a>).<\/li>\n
  7. In the User<\/span>\u00a0and Password<\/span>\u00a0fields, type the appropriate information as per the page above.<\/li>\n
  8. Click the Advanced<<\/span>\u00a0button, and select the PPP<\/span>\u00a0tab. Change the Settings<\/span>\u00a0dropdown to Configuration<\/span>\u00a0and ensure that ‘Send PPP echo packets<\/span>‘ isn’t checked.<\/li>\n
  9. Select the Modem<\/span>\u00a0tab.<\/li>\n
  10. Choose Other<\/span>\u00a0in the Vendor<\/span>\u00a0dropdown, and your phone should then be listed in the Model<\/span>\u00a0dropdown – choose it! Make sure that ‘Enable error correction and compression in modem<\/span>‘ is ticked.<\/li>\n
  11. Select the\u00a0DNS<\/span> tab, and add the DNS servers for your network provider, again as per Ross’\u00a0page<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Click\u00a0OK<\/span>, and then\u00a0Apply<\/span> once you’re back at the ‘Network’ window.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  13. Click\u00a0Connect <\/span>and bask in the glory of a reasonable internet connection anywhere you have ‘phone signal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    That’s it! Note that the ‘Internet Connect’ application in Tiger has disappeared with Leopard, so you’ll need to go into the System Preferences to connect, or have the modem status displayed in the status bar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
