On Saturday James and I decided to tackle our first Grade 3 scramble. The Chasm Face on Glyder Fach is described as “best enjoyed in the afternoon sun in summer”, so naturally we got an early-morning start in February, with pouring rain and apparently 70mph gusts (although we were sheltered from the worst of those). James did a cracking job of leading the route, but I have no photographs to show because quite frankly it was minging up there and we wanted to get off as soon as possible!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.haydnwilliams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/20080225b.jpg\" alt=\"Looking down the North Ridge of Tryfan. Tiredness was rife following the formal dinner the evening before (much fun was had by all), but as usual the North Ridge proved a brilliant day out. Highlights included the newly-formed “waterfall pitch” near the start, the creation of the word “smud” to describe smelly mud, and a touch of snow on the climb up to the summit. Much hilarity ensued when trying to fit the group through “the silly hole”, including an innovative ascent by James that included removing his rucksack halfway up – nice! (See photo above of me watching him in disbelief).
