The “they” in question is a couple of new contributors, rather than Ashton himself. It’s a welcome refresh to a classic book, although I’m concerned I’ve been doing it wrong all these years because the Cicerone website say that it’s suitable for use from “early March to the end of October“!

Anyway, I decided many years ago that I would aim to get through all of the scrambles in the book. Progress has slowed somewhat recently, but the new version contains 16 new routes, so there’s some more work to be done now. One of the new routes is Penmaenbach Arête, with the curious grade of “1+”, but intriguingly situated right next to the A55 coast road at Penmaenmawr.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6105" src="https://www.haydnwilliams.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/20180310-001-1.jpg" alt="From this angle the ridge is fairly obvious.
