Another year, another MPS trip. Penruddock was calling, and after the usual Friday-night excitement of continual arrivals we reconvened on Saturday morning for a trip around the northern fells. Unfortunately I failed to get any photos because the weather was a bit dreich. Suffice to say we did some lovely dynamic risk assessments, didn’t cross a river in spate, and eventually made it back to the car wet but in generally good spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday night’s forecast didn’t look great for a long excursion, so we agreed upon the Howgills as a sensible destination, being, as they are, on the way home (for 95% of the group, anyway).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully we only had a couple of squally showers pass through as we made our way around a horseshoe over The Calf, so the only really dangerous part was my heart rate whilst trying to keep pace with Brannock and Ben on the first ascent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We split into two groups at the top of the Calf, with our group then embarking on a fairly riotous descent back to valley level whilst wondering whether John’s shoes were going to just fall off as they gradually unlaced themselves. Anyway, I don’t think that had any effect on mine and Ben’s wonderous victory in reaching the bottom first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We finished the day off in typical fashion, i.e.<\/em> knowing that the other group was on the hill somewhere<\/em>, and most likely returning to the car the same way as us, but seeing no sign of them until actually back at the cars.
